Want to catch your meal, grill it by the stream, then walk to a waterfall before the day is over? This one-day tour in Mihama, Fukui, packs all of that into about 6 hours 30 minutes.
You ride e-bikes from JR Mihama Station through rural hills, fish a mountain stream, barbecue your catch, and trek to Byobugataki Falls (屏風ヶ滝). It suits groups of 4 to 10. The Wakasa Mihama Tourism Association runs it, and you book on KKday.
We built this guide from the KKday listing, the fishery’s website, Fukui’s tourism site and train timetables. The trickiest part is getting there on time, so we’ve covered that in detail.
Prices below are what KKday showed in October 2026 and change with the date and availability.

I haven’t ridden a bike in years. Will I manage?

Yes, if you can ride an ordinary bicycle without trouble. KKday gives that as the requirement. You also need to be fit enough for everyday activity such as climbing stairs.
Where You Fish: Shinjo Keiryu no Sato (新庄渓流の里)
The tour fishes at Shinjo Keiryu no Sato, a stream fishery run by a local freshwater fisheries group. Its website says it raises, sells and releases amago, iwana (whitespotted char) and rainbow trout, among other freshwater fish. Amago is a form of masu salmon.
KKday doesn’t say which of these you’ll catch.
The water
The fishery is 2.2 km long. It has 44 fishing sections over about 200 m, plus about 2 km of natural stream. KKday doesn’t say which part the tour uses.
The rules
Lures are banned. Fly fishing is allowed. The tour price covers your bait.
Your catch
You clean the fish yourself, then grill it at the barbecue.

Can I bring my own lures?

No. The fishery bans lures. Bait fishing is what the tour is built around, since KKday includes bait in the fishing fee.
KKday doesn’t name the rods you get. If you want to use your own rod, ask KKday first.
You don’t need a fishing license or day ticket for this tour. The fishing fee is part of the price.
Byobugataki Falls (屏風ヶ滝)
The falls are about 20 m high and drop into a cliff that surrounds them on three sides. Fukui’s tourism site puts the stream-side mountain path at about 40 minutes on foot, starting behind a Kansai Electric Power substation. KKday says the trek takes about 1 hour.
The tour’s listing says a figure of Fudo Myoo (不動明王) is carved there, and that mountain ascetics once trained at the falls.
Wear long sleeves, long trousers and shoes that grip. KKday asks for these on the trek.

Included
- Guide
- E-bike rental
- Stream fishing, bait included
- Tour insurance
Not included
- Transport to and from Mihama
Ask before you book. KKday’s list of what’s included doesn’t mention the barbecue food other than your catch, such as the wild game. If the game is a big reason you’re coming, ask KKday whether it’s covered.
Small groups. KKday says smaller groups pay extra and that its price is based on 4 people. It gives no price for 3 or fewer. If you’re fewer than four, we’d go with a message to KKday first. The tour needs at least 4 guests to run.
Paying on the day. The fishing fee is already in the price. The fishery’s website says it takes credit cards and QR payments for anything extra you buy there.
Who Can Join
⚠️ Age — The package says ages 12 to 75. KKday’s booking notice says 10 and over
- Height — 145 cm or taller. This is the safety standard for the rental e-bikes
- Riding — You can ride an ordinary bicycle and manage everyday activity such as stairs
- Health — People with heart disease, pregnant women and anyone who has been drinking can’t join
KKday asks for every guest’s shoe size and height when you book, so have them ready.
If you’re bringing a child who is 10 or 11, we’d ask KKday before booking. The package page says 12 and up, and the notice says 10 and up. Plan on 12 unless KKday says otherwise.
Getting to Mihama by 8:30
⚠️ No same-morning train from Kyoto or Osaka — The only Kyoto trains that arrive by 8:30 leave the night before and wait at a station until morning. Osaka is farther still
- The Obama Line gaps — Trains from Tsuruga reach Mihama at 06:38, 07:35, then 10:12. Nothing arrives between 07:35 and 10:12

Can we do this as a day trip from Kyoto?

No. No train from Kyoto or Osaka gets you to Mihama by 8:30 on the same morning. Sleep in Tsuruga the night before.
Stay in Tsuruga the night before
If you start from Kyoto, Osaka or Tokyo, we’d book a room in Tsuruga. The 07:11 Obama Line train leaves from there and reaches Mihama at 07:35, which beats the 8:30 meeting.
- From Osaka: Thunderbird 37 leaves at 17:09 and reaches Tsuruga at 18:30. Thunderbird 39 leaves at 17:40 and arrives at 19:00. The fare with a reserved seat is ¥4,700 (¥2,310 fare plus ¥2,390 seat) for the 17:09
- From Tokyo: leave at 15:39 on a Nozomi or Hikari, change at Maibara to the Shirasagi express, and arrive at 18:26. The fare is ¥13,940

By car
Mihama Station is 10 minutes from the Wakasa Mihama interchange, and its parking lot holds 20 cars, according to KKday. From Kansai Airport the drive is about 199 km. A map routing tool estimates about 3 hours 30 minutes without traffic.
If you land at Kansai Airport and drive, we’d still book a room near Mihama for the night before. Reaching the 8:30 meeting would mean leaving the airport around 5:00 at the latest, with no traffic.
