Fishing in the middle of Tokyo? It’s real, and you can be done by 12:45.

This morning tour starts at a shop in Nihonbashi Hamacho, in Tokyo’s Chuo Ward. You fish for goby (haze, ハゼ) with rental gear and bait. Children from age 6 can join, and the staff speak English.

We built this guide from the Klook listing, train timetables and a Japanese fishing column. We flag anything we couldn’t confirm.

Why Goby Fishing Is an Edo Tradition

Goby is a small fish that anglers around Tokyo have long enjoyed. FishBase lists the species as Acanthogobius flavimanus, the yellowfin goby.

Small fish, big tradition

Honda’s fishing column (in Japanese, 2010) says anglers have long loved goby. It counts it as an “Edo-mae” (江戸前) style of fishing, the traditional style of old Tokyo.

An Edo-period pastime

The Klook listing says goby fishing “was a favorite pastime for Edo-period locals.” That’s the operator’s own description. Edo is the old name for Tokyo.

Not a giant

Honda says goby near 20 cm turn up after mid-August (after Obon). Expect a small catch.

If a big catch is your goal, we’d skip this tour and try boat fishing on Tokyo Bay from Funabashi instead. Honda calls goby a small fish.

Alex

Can I try tanago fishing too?

Seto Angler

Maybe not. The listing’s highlights name goby, micro fishing and tanago (bitterling) fishing. But the only option you can book right now is the morning goby tour. If you want one of the others, ask Klook before you book.

When You Can Go

Klook sells this tour for July and September–November only. For October, Klook’s calendar offers Monday, Wednesday and Thursday dates. It showed no weekend dates.

Rain cancels the tour, so we’d pick a day with a free morning after it, if your trip allows.

Alex

What if it rains?

Seto Angler

The listing says the tour is canceled in rain or stormy weather. It doesn’t say how refunds work in that case, so ask Klook before you book. Canceling yourself at least 24 hours ahead gets a full refund.

Do You Need a Fishing License?

For rod fishing in the sea, you don’t need a license, according to Japan’s Fisheries Agency. Rules for rivers can differ from place to place, and this tour fishes in downtown waterways. The Klook price includes gear, bait and insurance, and the listing doesn’t mention a separate permit. Follow the staff’s instructions, and ask Klook if you’re unsure. For the full picture, read our fishing license guide.

After Your Tour

The tour ends at 12:45, so you have the afternoon free. Hamacho, Ningyocho and Suitengumae (水天宮前) stations are all within a 4–8 minute walk of the shop.

If you want a full day, we’d add an evening cruise. Klook sells a night cruise on a yakatabune (屋形船, a traditional roofed boat) on Tokyo Bay. It lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, and the languages listed are Chinese, English and Japanese. The boat leaves from Etchujima (越中島) in Koto City. Klook rates it 4.9 from 224 reviews (as of October 2026). Check the departure time on the booking page.
