Want to hook a squid at sunset, then eat it before the boat is back in port?
This KKday trip puts you on a private boat in the Oki Islands (隠岐諸島) at 17:00. You fish for white squid (shiro-ika, also called swordtip squid, Uroteuthis edulis) for 2 hours. Your gear is included, and KKday says you can eat the squid on board after it’s cleaned.
The hard part isn’t the fishing. It’s the ride home, because the last bus leaves before the trip even ends. We lay out the buses, ferries and a hotel that solves it.
We built this guide from the KKday listing and from the ferry, bus, airline, prefecture and fisheries sources named at the bottom. Anything we couldn’t confirm is marked.
Prices below are what KKday showed in October 2026 and change with the date and availability.

Is This Trip Right for You?
✅ Great if you…
- are already staying on Okinoshima (隠岐の島) overnight. Staying close to the meeting point solves the trip’s biggest problem, the ride home
- want to see the sun go down from a boat. KKday says the boat sets out as the sun sets, when the season and weather allow
- travel with a child aged 10 or over. The boat is private, so it’s just your group
- like the idea of eating squid you caught yourself
⚠️ Think twice if you…
- need an English-speaking guide. KKday lists Japanese as the only language
- are on a day trip. The last bus from Tsudo (津戸) toward Saigō (西郷) leaves at 15:58
- have a child under 10. Children under 10 can’t join
- worry about seasickness or toilets. The listing says nothing about either
📅 When you can book this trip
Open Part of the month Closed
KKday describes the season as “from early summer to autumn”. October is near the end of that range, and we couldn’t confirm whether November falls inside it. Shimane University’s research says the squid fishery itself runs June to December, but the listing sets the dates, so pick yours in KKday’s date selector.
Source: KKday listing and Shimane University research, checked October 2026.
If you want the safest window, we’d pick June to September. Those are the months clearly inside KKday’s “early summer to autumn”.

There are two possible meeting points. You start and finish at the same one.
| Meeting point | Address |
|---|---|
| ① The port in front of Okinokuni Diving (隠岐の国ダイビング前発着所) | 1275-5 Tsudo (津戸) |

KKday doesn’t say how it picks between the two. After you book, message KKday and ask which one is yours, then plan your hotel around it.
How Squid Fishing Works
Gear is included
KKday’s price covers rental fishing gear, so you don’t need your own rod.
Squid may not bite
The listing warns that you might not catch any. Plan your evening so it still works if you don’t.
Squid ink stains
Wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.
The captain’s word is final
Follow the captain’s instructions. KKday says guests who don’t may be asked to get off the boat.
If an octopus takes your hook, let it go. Shimane Prefecture’s fishing-rights list covers octopus in most of its waters, so visitors can’t keep them. Ask the captain what to do with it.

Do I need a fishing license?

Japan’s Fisheries Agency says foreign visitors can fish by rod or by hand from a charter boat. Our license guide has the details.
Eating Your Catch
KKday says you can eat the squid on the boat after it’s cleaned. If you’d like to take squid home, KKday says the styrofoam box is charged separately. It doesn’t list a price.
⚠️ Raw squid and Anisakis — Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare warns that Anisakis larvae live in seafood such as mackerel, sardines and squid. Eating them raw can cause severe stomach pain, usually within hours to a few days. Freezing at −20°C for at least 24 hours, or cooking at 70°C or higher (or 60°C for 1 minute), kills them. Vinegar, salt, soy sauce and wasabi do not
If you plan to take squid on the ferry, note the rules. Oki Kisen (隠岐汽船) says the high-speed boat doesn’t allow coolers, fishing gear or bait. On the ferry, staff direct coolers to the car deck.
Getting to the Oki Islands
Ferry and high-speed boat
Oki Kisen runs the ferries and has an English page. The 2nd-class ferry fare from the mainland is ¥3,870. The high-speed boat costs ¥7,360. Both take cards at the ports.
For this trip, take the ferry:
| Leg | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Shichirui (七類) to Saigō | 9:00 | 11:25 |
| Sakaiminato (境港) to Saigō | 14:10 | 18:35 |
Source: Oki Kisen timetable for June 1 to August 7 and August 17 to February 28, checked October 2026. Mid-August runs on a different timetable.
The 9:00 ferry from Shichirui is the only one that works. The 14:10 boat from Sakaiminato lands at 18:35, after the trip starts. The high-speed boat reaches Saigō at 16:54 (September to October) or 16:33 (November). Neither leaves time to reach the meeting point by 17:00. It doesn’t run from December 1 to February 28 either.
A connecting bus runs from Matsue Station (松江駅) at 7:50 and reaches Shichirui at 8:30 (¥1,200). You can’t reach it from far away on the same morning. A train from Shin-Osaka at 8:00 arrives in Matsue at 11:48. A train from Tokyo at 6:42 arrives at 12:49. A highway bus from Hiroshima at 8:45 arrives at 12:00. So if you’re coming from Tokyo, Osaka or Hiroshima, we’d suggest sleeping in Matsue or Sakaiminato the night before.
By air
JAL flies from Osaka Itami and from Izumo to Oki Airport. The Izumo flight leaves at 9:00 and lands at 9:30. The Itami flight changes with the season. It landed at 14:35 in the summer timetable. A transit search showed 12:20 to 13:10 for a November date. We couldn’t confirm JAL’s winter times, so check JAL before you book.
The airport bus to Saigō takes about 10 minutes and costs ¥520, paid in cash.
If you fly, we’d pick the Izumo flight. It lands at 9:30, which leaves hours before the 13:02 bus to Tsudo.
From Saigō to the meeting point
Oki Ichibata Kotsu (隠岐一畑交通) runs the buses. From Saigō Port you change buses at Oki Hospital (隠岐病院). The Tsuma line (都万線) then runs to Tsudo.
Buses that reach Tsudo at 13:02 and 15:36 get you there before 17:00. The fare is up to ¥500 each way, cash only. Ask the driver for a transfer ticket.
The bus stops are called Tsudo (津戸) and Island Park Hotel (あいらんどパーク前). We couldn’t confirm which stop is closest to each meeting point, so ask KKday after you book.
Getting back after 19:00
⚠️ No bus back — The last bus from Tsudo toward Saigō leaves at 15:58. The trip ends around 19:00
- Taxis need booking — Visit Oki, the islands’ tourism site, lists eight taxi companies and says taxis aren’t always available, so you need to book ahead. We couldn’t find fares
- Rental cars — Oki Ichibata Rent-a-Car doesn’t allow its cars for fishing. Its rental page says it declines use of its cars for fishing and for traveling with pets. We couldn’t confirm the rules of other rental companies

Can I get back to Saigō after the trip?

Not by bus. The last one leaves Tsudo at 15:58, hours before you’re back. Book a taxi ahead, or sleep near the meeting point.
The simplest fix is to sleep near the meeting point, which is what the next section covers. For the trip home, the ferry leaves Saigō at 8:30 (reaching Sakaiminato at 13:20) and at 15:40 (reaching Shichirui at 18:05).
Sleeping in Matsue before the morning ferry? Klook lists these in the Matsue area. Klook sets the prices, and they change by date.
Where to Stay
If your boat leaves from Okinokuni Diving, we’d book Island Park Hotel (あいらんどパークホテル, Oki Island Resort Island Park Hotel). Google Maps shows an 11-minute, 800 m walk to the meeting point, so you can walk back after the trip.
- Address: 896 Tsudo (津戸)
- Getting there: Klook says it’s 15 minutes by car from Saigō Port. The bus stop is called Island Park Hotel (あいらんどパーク前)
- Check-in: from 15:00
- Good to know: Klook lists a restaurant and says guests of all ages can stay
If your meeting point is the wharf near Hagoromo-so (②), look at Hagoromo-so itself. Its address is the same as that meeting point (2213 Tsuma). Visit Oki says it’s 25 minutes by car from Saigō Port. It isn’t on Klook. We couldn’t confirm that either place will cook your catch.
Booking, Cancellation and Bad Weather
KKday lists Japanese as the only language. You can still book through KKday’s English page, and messages about your meeting point go through KKday too.

The listing is in Japanese only. Can I still book?

Yes. The KKday page is in English, and your order and any questions go through KKday.
Booking works like this:
- Confirmation: KKday confirms your booking within 1 day after you order
- Deadline: You can book up to 3 days before, until 16:59 Japan time
- Bad weather: KKday says a trip canceled for bad weather is fully refunded. It also says the sales period may change with sea conditions
- Meeting point: Ask KKday which of the two you’ve been given
If your dates are fixed, we’d book before the 11-day mark so a change of plans still costs nothing.
KKday’s cancellation policy (as of October 2026):
KKday doesn’t say what makes the price go up from the “from” price, so check the total on the booking page before you pay.
What to Bring
🎒 Your packing list
- ☐ Clothes and shoes you don’t mind staining with squid ink (KKday)
- ☐ Cash for the bus. Oki Ichibata Kotsu takes cash only
- ☐ Only what you need on the boat. KKday lists no carry-on luggage, so leave big bags at your hotel
Around the Oki Islands
You’ll be on Okinoshima for the night, so use the time. Visit Oki says rental bicycles are available at the Okinoshima Tourism Association, inside the Oki Islands Geopark Visitor Center next to the Saigō ferry terminal. It recommends booking ahead because the bikes are limited.
Spending a night in Matsue before or after the islands? Klook lists these experiences there. Klook sets the prices, and they change by date.
