Spend a morning on a fishing boat in Tokyo Bay, then learn to fillet what you caught and cook it for lunch. This tour runs from Yokosuka, a port town about an hour from central Tokyo by train, and no experience or gear is needed.
Tour details below come from the KKday listing, catch numbers from the boat shop’s own published reports, and train information from Keikyu and a route planner. Where something couldn’t be confirmed, we say so.

Meeting at the harbor
You meet at Murakami Fishing Boat Shop (村上釣舟店), also known by its boat’s name, Chiyokichimaru (千代吉丸), at Shin-Yasuura Port (新安浦港), 3-4 Heiseicho, Yokosuka. The guides speak English, Japanese, Korean, Thai and Mandarin, according to KKday.
On the water
The guides show you how to handle the rod and reel in a fish, and they choose the method to suit the group, the weather and the tide. There is little shade on board, so bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. The boat has a toilet, but KKday warns it can be hard to use when the boat is rocking, so go before you leave.

I’m a strong swimmer. Do I really need the life jacket?

Yes. The boat shop asks everyone to wear its life jackets, and it warns that boarding early in the morning, while it’s still dark, is dangerous.

Put it on before you step aboard, and follow the captain’s instructions.
Cooking and eating your catch
According to KKday, the cooking lesson takes place at a nearby venue about 10 minutes away by car, and staff explain the route. We could not confirm how guests without a car get there, so if you are coming by train, ask the operator through KKday before you book.
The instructors teach the basics: how to hold a knife, how to fillet a fish and how to control the heat. You make a dish that suits the day’s catch, such as grilled fish, fish simmered in a soy-based broth (nitsuke), or sashimi.

Sashimi from a fish I just caught? Is that safe?

Raw fish can carry anisakis, a parasite, and Japan’s health ministry says vinegar, salt, soy sauce and wasabi don’t kill it. Freezing at −20°C for 24 hours or more kills it, and so does heating to 70°C or above (or 60°C for one minute).

For raw fish, the ministry’s advice is to check the flesh and remove any larvae you see. If you’d rather not take the risk, choose the grilled or simmered dish.
What You Can Catch, Month by Month
🐟 The fish
Horse mackerel (aji) all year, with other fish as a bonus
🎣 How the shop fishes
A chum basket (bishi) on a sinker, with hooks baited with strips of red-dyed squid. On the tour, the guides pick the method for the day
📅 Season
In the shop’s words, it starts around May, peaks from July to October, and aji can be caught until about December
What you’ll mostly catch: horse mackerel. Murakami Fishing Boat Shop, where the tour meets, runs horse mackerel (aji) boats in the morning and afternoon all year, and these are its only regular trips. Other fish bite now and then as bycatch. The KKday listing doesn’t name a target fish for the tour, and the guides choose the method for the day.
The table below shows how many horse mackerel one person caught on a typical day in 2025, the last full year of records. It counts the shop’s regular morning boat, not this tour.
| Month | Horse mackerel per person slowest angler → best angler | Also caught (bycatch) |
|---|---|---|
| January | 5 → 41 fish | Black sea bream, scorpionfish |
| February | 8 → 26 fish | Black sea bream, scorpionfish, mackerel |
| March | 8 → 29 fish | Mackerel, black sea bream, scorpionfish |
| April | 5 → 31 fish | Mackerel, white croaker, scorpionfish |
| May | 5 → 18 fish | Mackerel, white croaker |
| June | 11 → 37 fish | Mackerel, red sea bream |
| July | 5 → 39 fish | Scorpionfish, red sea bream |
| August | 5 → 38 fish | Scorpionfish, black sea bream, red sea bream |
| September Best | 22 → 71 fish | Scorpionfish, black sea bream, young amberjack, red sea bream |
| October Best | 18 → 78 fish | Scorpionfish, red sea bream, young amberjack |
| November Best | 23 → 95 fish | Scorpionfish, black sea bream, young yellowtail |
| December Best | 26 → 64 fish | Scorpionfish, black sea bream, red gurnard |
Source: Murakami Fishing Boat Shop (Chiyokichimaru) catch reports, 197 trips in 2025, checked October 2026. Each number is the median for the month: the shop reports the lowest and highest catch on board each day. “Also caught” lists the other species the shop mentioned most often that month in 2025–2026.
What this means for you: from September to December, even the slowest angler typically caught around 20 horse mackerel or more. From January to August, a slow angler might catch only 5 to 11. On a typical day the fish measured about 20–33 cm, and the largest in 2025 was 47 cm, on November 2. In 2026 so far (163 trips to October 7), the best angler on a typical day caught about 67 to 75 from July to September.
Where the boat goes: from July to December it mostly fished off Sarushima Island at 30–45 m. From January to June it also went farther out, off Kannonzaki and Kurihama, at depths of up to about 90 m.
How to Get There from the Airport and Tokyo
You have to be at the harbor by 6:30 a.m., so flying in and joining on the same day isn’t realistic. Most visitors will want to arrive the day before. Here are three ways to plan it.
PLAN A · EASIEST
Train + a night in Yokosuka
Take the train from the airport the day before and stay near Yokosuka-chuo Station. In the morning it’s a 3-minute train ride and a 15-minute walk.
PLAN B · MOST FLEXIBLE
Rent a car at the airport
Drive to Yokosuka the day before. A car also gets you to the cooking venue, which is about 10 minutes away by car. No transfer is provided.
Cars at Haneda Airport →PLAN C · NO MARGIN
First train from Tokyo
Possible on weekdays if you’re already staying in Tokyo, but you reach the harbor only about 3 minutes before the 6:30 deadline.
From the airport to Yokosuka
Both main Tokyo airports connect to Yokosuka-chuo Station (横須賀中央駅) by train. These are sample weekday afternoon trips we looked up for October 2026:
✈️ Haneda Airport (Terminal 3)
about 1 hour · ¥670
Keikyu Line, with one change (at Keikyu Kamata or Kanazawa-bunko). IC card fare.
✈️ Narita Airport
about 2 hours 40 min · ¥2,133
Keisei Access Express, changing at Sengakuji to the Keikyu Line. IC card fare.
Source: Yahoo! Japan Transit, searched for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, leaving at 15:00. Times change with the time of day, so check your own trip.
Stay in Yokosuka the night before
From Yokosuka-chuo, Horinouchi Station (堀ノ内駅), the nearest station to the harbor, is a 3- to 4-minute train ride away (¥150 by IC card). On a weekday in October 2026, a 6:01 train from Yokosuka-chuo reached Horinouchi at 6:04. Add the 15-minute walk to the harbor, which both KKday and the boat shop give, and you arrive around 6:20.
🏨 A hotel next to the station
Central Hotel Yokosuka is about 100 m, or a 2-minute walk, from Yokosuka-chuo Station, according to its Klook listing. The listing also shows:
- a 24-hour front desk, which helps when you check out before 6 a.m.
- luggage storage (ask whether you can leave bags until after the tour)
- parking for ¥1,650 a night, if you come by car
Check room rates and the check-in time for your dates on the booking page.
Check Central Hotel Yokosuka on Klook →First train from Tokyo
If you stay in Tokyo instead, the earliest weekday connection we found from Shinagawa in October 2026 looked like this:
5:09
Leave Shinagawa
(Keikyu Line, ¥667 by IC card)
6:12
Arrive at Horinouchi
then walk 15 minutes
about 6:27
At the harbor
you must arrive by 6:30
That leaves no margin. Early trains differ on weekends and holidays, so check your own date.

What if my train is late and I miss the start?

KKday says late arrivals are not accepted and a cancellation fee is charged. That’s why a night in Yokosuka is the safest plan.
Elevator work at Horinouchi Station
⚠️ No elevators on these dates (planned, and subject to change)
Keikyu is replacing the platform elevators at Horinouchi Station, according to its notice (in Japanese):
- Platform for Shinagawa and Yokohama: October 20, 2026, from the first train, to December 17, 2026, 10:00
- Platform for Misakiguchi (arriving from Tokyo): December 22, 2026, from the first train, to March 18, 2027, 10:00
If you carry a suitcase or a rod case on those dates, plan for stairs. If you are flying in with rods, see how to bring fishing rods to Japan.
By car
Renting a car at the airport on the day you land lets you drive to Yokosuka, stay the night, and then drive to the harbor and on to the cooking venue. KKday gives directions from the Yokosuka and Sawara interchanges on the Yokohama-Yokosuka Expressway.
🚗 Before you rent
- Driving permit: Tokyo’s police say only international driving permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention are valid in Japan. Permits under other conventions, including the Vienna Convention, are not. Ask the rental company which documents every driver must bring before you pay.
- Harbor parking: ¥500 a day, with space for 30 cars, and large buses are not allowed (as of October 2026). Park within the white lines, not in front of the shop. We could not confirm whether the fee can be paid by card, so carry some cash.
- Hotel parking: if you stay at Central Hotel Yokosuka, its Klook listing shows parking for ¥1,650 a night.

If the day runs the full 9 hours, you finish around 15:30–16:00. Sample weekday trips from October 2026 (IC card fares):
Horinouchi → Haneda Airport (Terminal 3)
About 1 hour, one change at Keikyu Kamata, ¥670
Yokosuka-chuo → Shinagawa
About 55 minutes on a direct limited express, ¥620

Booking, Cancellation and Bad Weather
Booking
The tour is listed on both KKday and Klook, and prices and dates are on each booking page. On KKday, your booking starts as a request and is confirmed once the operator approves it, one day after you order. You can book for 1 to 20 people, but the tour needs at least 8 participants to run.
KKday asks for the ages of any children when you book. Tell the operator in advance about allergies, or foods you can’t eat for religious reasons. Send questions through the booking site: the boat shop takes bookings for its own trips by phone only, and its website is in Japanese.
Cancellation
KKday’s cancellation policy (as of October 2026):
KKday notes that canceling before the operator confirms your request may also incur a fee under this policy.
Weather
The tour goes ahead in light rain. It is canceled if strong wind or high waves make the sea unsafe, or if not enough people have booked, and the organizer contacts you by 6:00 p.m. the day before. If the weather turns after the boat has left port and it returns early for safety, KKday says there is no refund.

If the weather cancels the trip, do I lose my money?

If the operator cancels before the day, you hear by 6:00 p.m. the day before. KKday only says that early returns after leaving port are not refunded, so ask how a weather cancellation is refunded when you book.

🍛 The local dish
Yokosuka is known for Yokosuka kaigun curry (よこすか海軍カレー), recreated from a recipe in a cookbook published by the former Imperial Japanese Navy in 1908. The city says the basic rule is to serve it with a salad and a glass of milk.
FAQ
QDo I need fishing experience?
No. KKday describes the tour as beginner-friendly, and the guides start from the basics.
QWhat if I catch nothing?
It can happen, and the catch is not promised. Ask the operator what the cooking lesson uses if the catch is small.
QCan I bring my own rod?
Gear is included, so you don’t need to. If you want to use your own, ask the operator before booking.
QDo I need a fishing license?
No. We found no license system for rod fishing in the sea in official sources. Japan’s Fisheries Agency allows foreign visitors to rod-fish from shared fishing charters run by Japanese fishers, and asks everyone to follow local rules on fish sizes and fishing areas, so follow the crew’s instructions. For rivers, lakes and shore fishing, see do you need a fishing license in Japan?
QCan children join?
Yes, from age 5. Under-18s must come with a parent or guardian.
QCan I join on my own?
Yes, you can book for one person. The tour needs at least 8 participants, so it may be canceled if not enough people book.
QWhere can I leave luggage?
We could not find luggage storage details for the harbor or the cooking venue, so ask the operator before the day. If you stay the night before, Central Hotel Yokosuka lists luggage storage on Klook: ask whether you can leave bags there until after the tour.
QWill I be photographed?
Staff may take photos and videos for social media. If you’d rather not appear, tell them in advance.
QWhich currency do I pay in?
KKday’s English site showed the price in US dollars when we checked. Check the amount and currency at checkout.
